Our story
It started with a pair of trucks, two employees and a kitchen for an office.
Mike Hildebrand and Al Jones founded James River Nurseries in 1983 with two other employees and a pair of trucks, and Hildebrand's kitchen served as the original office. Today we farm more than 200 acres in Ashland and Montpelier, where we cultivate growing fields and landscape materials and maintain greenhouses year round.
Many things have changed since the early years, but our philosophy remains as steadfast today as it was when we began. Through the years we have been chosen as the landscape provider for some of the area's most successful builders, general contractors and developers, and we have had the pleasure of helping thousands of individual homeowners across Central Virginia with their landscaping needs.
